When you notice white, brown or blackish discoloration or spotting of your teeth you know it is dental fluorosis. The reason for this is overexposure to fluoride that occurs between 3 months to 8 years of ages and hence is irreversible. Post eruption the eth cannot develop enamel fluorosis, however the stains and spots might darken over time.
Types Of Dental Fluorosis
Very Mild: Small opaque, paper white areas covering less than 25% of the tooth surface.
Mild: Opaque white areas covering less than 50% of the tooth surface.
Moderate: All tooth surfaces affected; marked wear on biting surfaces; brown stain may be present
Severe: All tooth surfaces affected; discrete or confluent pitting; brown stain present
Cause Of Dental Fluorosis
The main reason is exposure to over fluoridated water and hence dental fluorosis is seen affecting population in certain belts or regions specifically. Certain other reasons are use of fluoridated mouth rinse and tooth pastes (ingestion of adult fluoridated toothpaste by kids below 6 years), bottled waters not tested for fluoride content, inappropriate fluoride supplements usage, ingestion of foods particularly imported from other countries, and public water fluoridation.
Treatment
Dental fluorosis is cosmetically treatable.Different treatment options depending on the severity include:
