Tooth Extraction Procedure
Step 1: Examination and X-Ray to study the bone structure and also to assess the difficulty in extracting the tooth and relation of the tooth to the adjoining anatomical structures. Rarely a 3-D scan is also taken for the same.
Step 2: Administration of local anaesthesia to cause numbness. Once the numbness has taken its effect, the entire procedure becomes comfortable and pain free. Painkillers are given so that you continue to be pain free.
Step 3: Extraction of the tooth by the oral surgeon and if required sutures will be placed after the procedure.
Step 4: Post Extraction Care and a course of antibiotics which will be explained in detail to the patient.
Time Taken
It takes around 15-20 minutes to extract one teeth. Depending on the number of teeth required to be extracted, accordingly the time taken to complete the procedure will vary.
Cost
Tooth extraction cost Rs900 per tooth.
Wisdom Tooth Extraction cost ranges between Rs3500 to Rs4,500 per tooth depending upon the level of difficulty.
FAQs
Is tooth extraction a painful Procedure?
It’s absolutely a pain free procedure once the numbness has taken its effect. For numbness to take its effect a local anaesthesia will be administered. Some patients do express pressure like feeling during the procedure as it is a local anaesthesia and not general anaesthesia.
How long will it take to recover after a tooth extraction?
Postoperative home care instructions are given after extraction, if you follow those, then you will have a speedy recovery. Recovery depends on multiple factors and varies from a day or two up to a week or two.
Can I smoke after the procedure?
Strictly avoid smoking and alcohol consumption for 7 days after the procedure otherwise your extraction wound won’t heal.
Is there any food restriction after the procedure is completed?
Yes, for the next seven days you will be asked to avoid eating food which is extremely hot and spicy. You will be asked to be on soft diet, also avoid hard food. Not to consume carbonated drink and alcohol until the wound heals.
Why is there a need for extraction of wisdom teeth?
As a result of human evolution our jaws have become smaller in size there by decreasing the space for the eruption of the wisdom tooth. This causes the tooth to incompletely erupt in various direction. This incomplete eruption also called impaction, makes it inaccessible while brushing. Now this makes it prone to infection.
When do dentists recommend Wisdom Tooth Extraction?
Most dentists abroad routinely perform wisdom tooth extraction when the patients are in between 18 to 21 years. Here we recommend wisdom tooth extraction in the following scenarios:
- When there is infection present.
- When there is a heavy decay present.
- When impacted teeth are giving rise to pain.
- When the impacted teeth are broken.
What happens when the post operative instructions are followed incompletely?
You will experience some or all of the following if you don’t follow the post operative instructions to the dot.
- Prolonged bleeding
- Delayed healing
- Secondary Infection
- Dry socket – Severe pain and burning that starts from 2nd to 4th day that doesn’t come down with painkillers, caused due to dislodgement of the clot form and exposure of bone hence there is no other alternative than to wait for the healing to take place which takes about two weeks. In this meantime partial symptomatic pain management is possible by obtunace
